Groundwork RVA programs work with youth to occupy a hands-on role in creating positive changes to enhance green spaces in Richmond communities.

 

In afterschool and summer settings, we encourage youth to think innovatively about mending community. Teens address new opportunities to connect residents by increasing access to local and National Parks, improving school campuses, and creating neighborhood assets from blighted or contaminated sites.

Groundwork RVA in Action

Our team has been busy at work in the community changing places and changing lives.

Green Team is #unstoppable. We have been busy this week with #OurFolks, a program designed to teach youth about small home improvements and provide help to our elder neighbors with fixed incomes. They are been powerwashing pathways, decks and homes trying to remove slick algae. Repainting window trim and digging up walkway that have been covered up for 4-6years. This program is only a small part of the Green Team curriculum that includes gardening, climate resiliency, and outdoor recreation. We hope to do sooo much more but we need your help. Green Team was at it again this weekend. We finished filling and planting 5 garden beds at Hillside Court’s Community Garden. The world has found itself in an unprecedented time and seems to be changing every day. We at Groundwork RVA have always supported youth of color and their exploration into the natural world. In recent years we have worked to create more resilient communities. Green Team Spring 2020: Covid Edition is cementing that work by teaching youth how to garden at home and in the community. Thanks to @rvatoolbank for providing us with tool access so each of our youth can have their own set of tools. Youth were issued gloves and masks have been made available. We try to keep as far away from one another and wear masks whenever possible. . @rei @hydroflask @patagonia @thenorthface @llbean we are always looking for gear donations and general support to keep our youth equipped during their next adventure.

Before the Coronavirus Pandemic started Green Team had been out and about it working to make Richmond a better place. Seed starting, deploying trash cans, and weeding folks front yards to name a few. We were forced to end early but are now looking at starting a Spring Session of Green Team focused on meeting community needs and helping support our youth. Green Team has been working hard this fall making community trash can and making sure that neighbor voice are heard during the Richmond300 planning. With the help of the VisArts Center we were able to give them a break and some clay relaxation time.
